Getting fed up with Winston ....
The more i think about this, the more i feel this is showing some real bad character.. Winston has been great for us, no two ways about it The last couple of seasons, he has been probably our most consistent performer.
But his stalling over signing this new contract is frankly proper cuntish.
Maybe as west ham supporters we find it hard to believe that, there might be better options than playing for the hammers , but we have turned into a real decent side this season, and winston in a no way better than the other member of the first team , he is at a team that is on a par with his current ability.
I have a bad feeling that he wants to run down his current contract and fuck off on a free , at the end of the season.
Also hus unwillingness to sign, is a blip on an otherwise tight unit , he is no way irreplaceable , a large part of me wants him out in january, as i really think this shows a real bad character flaw in winnie.
Maybe im being to harsh on him, and this is just part of the modern game now days and he's just weighing up his options as any sensible player would , or he's mugging us right off.
Whadd ya reckon ?

He is going to wait to see if he gets a silly offer from someone. This is how football is these days. While in this instance we may lose out, we have signed plenty of players who have been out of contract, so it swings both ways.

If he does leave,we should keep him until the summer. He may very well join a club that finishes below us and doesnt qualify for Europe.Favourites seem to be Liverpool. In which case he wont be moving to a more currently successful side will he?

Nice in principle baggins , but when have we ever got an 8 million pound player on a bozzie .... ??

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
No offence but why should he sign a new contract just because you're getting fed up?

He's taking advantage of the Bosman ruling which gives the player total control over their next move and the likelihood that he can get a massive signing on fee and a bumper contract with a big club. The only risk for him is a serious injury.

He still might sign for us but what would you do in his situation? If you was honest?

Don't worry mate...he's not irreplaceable...and not that good...compared to Prem or top Euro League CB'S ...

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
I can see why Winston's holding out, we get into Europe and it adds up to a lot more games, if anyone on here volunteered for extra work they'd be roundly bollocked wouldn't they.

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
i would sign ! if he does not feel an alliance to us, then he is clearly a mercenary .
The fans have been great with him, the team is going places, he's been offered a cracking contract , and h is still weighing up his options.
It is what it is mate

Couldn't disagree more with those who suggest he would be easy to replace. He is a focused, committed defender. Good positional sense, decent pace and rarely makes rash challenges. Fits perfectly into the way we play.

God forbid the type of lanky, plane spotting, european individuals that regularly pitch up at Arsenal and Liverpool.

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
Longford - True, although Diame would have cost us a few quid when we picked him up for nothing.

Its a shame to lose a bloke who has progressed so much since joining us and who still has some good seasons ahead of him. But that is how football is these days.

He might yet sign but I see why he is holding out. Someone could offer him silly money.

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
if Sam knows anything, its a good centre back . you're right tho , it will be a set back.
But essentially he is a good premier league centre back , we're not talking a young rio ferdinand here.
Which makes his behaviour even more frustrating

That's football today I'm afraid. Although even dear old Bobby Moore wanted out at one stage and Sir Trev checked with Ron Greenwood then Manager of England if playing in the Second Division would hurt his England chances and yet they both ended up as Legends.

Let's say for arguments sake that Reid left and we signed Ron Vlaar for instance. A decent replacement I think but he wants out at Villa by all accounts so one teams new signing is another teams mercenary!!

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
Reid wasn't even starting before Sam joined the club. Nobody rated him in the slightest. Ginge was a Villa cast-off who no-one rated.

Sam's created a strong central defence seemingly out of nothing. I suspect he'll do it again if Winston goes.

Lee Trundle 2:27 Tue Dec 9
Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
Personally, I don't think he's played too much like an £80k + a week defender this season. Tomkins and Collins have pretty much been just as good as him. I would have said we should be pushing the boat out for him last season.

I don't like breaking up this squad we have, but if he hasn't signed a new contract by mid January, then we should bring in his new replacement and let him do what he wants to do.

spot on that. I used to think we needed to re-sign him at whatever cost, but centre back isn't the hardest position to fill. If we can keep Jenks and creswell, I'm not too fussed if Reid leaves.

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
If you thought you might get a massive deal in your career if you held off from signing a new contract for a couple of months then you'd do it - everybody would. He shouldn't get castigated just because he is a footballer. As much as we like them to, I don't understand why people expect that kind of behaviour from a footballer but wouldn't expect it in any other walk of life - people call it loyalty but it has nothing to do with that. A player like any other person has to choose what is best for them and their career/life and although money plays a big part they have to weigh up a number of different things. If them waiting a few months makes their mind clearer then so be it.

That said the club also have criteria for offering contracts and they should have plans in place as Trundle suggested.

So far I don't see either party doing anything wrong and I'd expect to hear us linked with a couple of defenders in the coming weeks to try and force Winstons hand.

Re: Getting fed up with Winston ....
His position is one which we haven't had to spend a fucking penny on.

Reid can make a lot more than whatever offer is on the table if we have a superb season and another team determines him to be worth a big contract.

I like Reid and hope he stays but if we have to go out and buy a proper CB so be it. I don't think he is a cunt who will play like shit rest of the season either.

He is a top quality centre half no mistaking that

Most important for him is that he is good at a time there is a world shortage of top quality centre half's just look at the top clubs in England , he's no Alvin Martin or Rio but he's better than 90% of the CH's playing in England

Loyalty to us , he has none he's a Kiwi who has lived in Denmark so probably knew fuck all about us before he signed

Hope he signs we need him to but don't expect it, and we know the replacement will not be as good or the Mancs or Gooners would have signed him
